Low-Waste Adventures at the Farmer's Market

One of the best ways to avoid plastic on produce, is to go direct to the farmers.

This past weekend we made our first journey to the Studio City Farmer’s Market - one of the famed Los Angeles farmer’s markets that allow Angelenos to meet their farmers and get fresh produce.

I love farmer’s markets. I love ogling the fresh produce, meeting the people who help grow it and finding locally made goods. With the craziness that is LA, however, we haven’t made trips like this very regular.

I learned this weekend though, that even when you do go, you aren’t guaranteed to avoid plastic (see: strawberries) not to mention produce seems to double in price even though you are cutting out the grocery middle man.

Something to look for: I’m not sure about Los Angeles, but in Portland, certain farmer’s markets and vendors now take SNAP or you can get a match, which is a great way to help bring fresh produce to everyone.

What did our haul look like?

  • 🥚 A dozen farm fresh eggs. I’m super excited about this one. I love happy chickens and fresh eggs are so different than the ones you buy in the store.

  • 🥗 Half a pound of arugula, completely plastic free and super delicious.

  • 🍓 One flat of strawberries. Unfortunately, the do come with a small plastic container, but it is less than what you would get in the store.

  • 🥦 Broccoli. Came with a rubber band, but all plastic free.

  • 🌱 Purple brussel sprouts. We’re excited for these ones.

Do you have a favorite farmer’s market? Any tips for me as I continue to try and avoid plastic on my produce? Let me know! 👇
