Homemade nourishing coco shea lotion

It’s the middle of winter and my skin is getting dry, how about you?

To keep alligator skin at bay, try this recipe for a homemade, nourishing and plastic-free lotion. It uses ingredients that don’t typically come in plastic containers. Plus, once you have the base ingredients, it’ll last you forever.

On top of that, you know exactly what’s in it. No harmful preservatives, fragrances or other toxins here!

In general, I feel this recipe is a little too thick for the face, so it’s mostly a body moisturizer.

All you need:

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil

  • 1/4 cocoa butter

  • 1/4 cup shea butter

  • Essential oil of your choice (orange or lavender are great)

  • Blender

Directions:

  1. Check the oil and butters to see if they are too cold and hard. If they need it, make a quick hot water bath and dip the jars in there for several minutes to warm them up. Use tongs and be careful!

  2. Scrape out and measure the coconut oil and butters and add them to the blender. Mix on medium for several minutes. Scrape down the sides when needed. A hot water bath can often loosen up the oil a bit to help make it more creamy.

  3. Add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Blend the mixture until creamy and smooth. It will probably take a few minutes. The cocoa butter tends to clump — with longer blending it should smooth out a bit.

  4. Add to a jar and store in a cooler place. It should be used within a few months.

  5. Apply after a bath, shower or whenever you need it.
